Calculation and selection of shut-off valves

The type and size of the shut-off valve are selected based on the diameter of the pipeline on which it is installed. The shut-off valve does not cause significant pressure loss, so its selection is made without prior hydraulic calculation.

The main characteristics that affect the selection of shut-off valves are the nominal pressure and the allowable range of temperatures of the transported medium. The value of the maximum operating pressure at the installation location of the valve should be lower than the value of its nominal pressure PN, and the temperature limits of the transported medium should fall within the range of allowable temperatures for this valve.

It should be remembered that the nominal pressure for the valve is determined at a medium temperature of 20°C, and at higher temperatures the value of the nominal pressure is reduced. Therefore, it is not allowed to operate the shut-off valve in a mode where the pressure and temperature of the working medium correspond to the values of the nominal pressure and maximum temperature for this valve. In such a case, it is recommended to select a valve with higher operating parameters.
