Thermal disinfection of hot water systems with water heater tanks

Domestic design standards do not include provisions for thermal disinfection of hot water systems. However, European design standards mandate thermal disinfection in all hot water systems, excluding those in one or two-family cottages and systems with a water heater volume up to 400 liters, along with a distribution pipe water volume of no more than 3 liters.

Requirements outlined by European standards for systems with mandatory thermal disinfection and recommendations for low-capacity systems:

  • The storage water heater must be equipped with an inspection hatch.
  • The circulation line should extend to the water supply fittings.
  • Operating the storage water heater in a mode allowing disconnection for more than 8 hours is not permitted.
  • Hot water pipes must have mandatory thermal insulation, and the thermal and hydraulic regime must ensure a circulation water temperature decrease of no more than 5°C at the inlet to the tank.
  • Once a day, the temperature should be raised to 60°C throughout the entire tank volume. To achieve even heating of the tank's entire volume, a bypass line device can be used in the heating water circuit with a periodically activated circulation pump.
